Manchester United are making significant strides in their pursuit of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, following an improved bid. Although negotiations have advanced well, a few details still remain to be ironed out before the agreement is sealed.
Mbeumo has emerged as a top target for United, seen as an ideal fit for an attacking midfield role alongside recent signing Matheus Cunha. His outstanding form last season made him one of the Premier League’s most coveted attackers. The Cameroon international netted 20 league goals for Brentford in the 2024/25 campaign — a tally surpassed only by Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, and Alexander Isak — marking the first time he has hit double digits in a top-flight season.
Prior to making his mark in the Premier League, Mbeumo registered 11 goals for Troyes in Ligue 2 during the 2018/19 campaign and followed that with 16 strikes for Brentford in the Championship the next year. Since stepping up to the Premier League, he has consistently delivered, scoring eight, nine, and nine goals across all competitions in each of his first three seasons.
Although United’s opening bid of roughly £55 million was rejected, Brentford are holding out for a figure closer to the £62.5 million they received for Matheus Cunha. United responded with a second offer worth over £60 million, including £55 million upfront and an additional £5 million in potential add‑ons.
Brentford, while nearing acceptance, are still looking for more concrete and attainable performance-related bonuses to secure guaranteed returns rather than speculative payments. Despite United being the frontrunners, the Bees have kept their options open and may entertain other bids to trigger a bidding war.
If finalized, the deal would break Brentford’s record sale, surpassing the £40 million received from Al‑Ahli for Ivan Toney. Mbeumo is reportedly eager for the move and has already turned down interest from Tottenham and Newcastle. The forward has agreed to personal terms with United, including a weekly salary of approximately £250,000.
United are aiming to complete the signing before their pre‑season campaign begins on July 7, allowing Mbeumo to integrate into a revitalized attack built for new tactical demands. His blend of pace, pressing, and technical link‑up play suits a system relying on inside forwards and creative wingers.
With negotiations ongoing, the main sticking point is the structure of payments and bonuses. United are pressing to finalize the agreement, and Brentford appear open to finding a middle ground — bringing the deal closer to the finish line.
