After being transferred from Manchester United to Marseille this summer, Mason Greenwood remains eager to pursue an international career with England, according to The Sun.
The forward, hopeful for a conversation with newly-appointed England manager Thomas Tuchel, still aspires to don the England jersey despite the controversies that affected his time at Old Trafford. Greenwood plans to consult with both the FA and Tuchel to gauge their perspectives before making any commitments.
Tuchel stepped in as England’s manager following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after Euro 2024, with his official term starting in early 2025 for an 18-month period.
Greenwood, who made his sole appearance for England in 2020, is driven to secure more caps. Following serious legal issues in 2022, he initially resumed his professional journey through a loan stint at Getafe, which led to his current role at Marseille. He has since netted five goals in seven Ligue 1 matches, proving his form despite his long absence from the pitch.
An insider shared with The Sun: “Mason knows his England prospects are slim, but he’s eager to understand where he stands with the FA and Tuchel. His goal is to play at the highest level, ideally targeting the World Cup. Should England be out of reach, he may explore representing Jamaica in 2026.”
A comeback to the England squad, however, appears unlikely. Both Southgate and interim coach Lee Carsley were hesitant to bring Greenwood back, and it’s anticipated that Tuchel and the FA will follow suit to avoid potential backlash from his inclusion.
England’s competitive attacking lineup further complicates Greenwood’s chances, as players like Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Jarrod Bowen have flourished since Greenwood’s last appearance. Realistically, Jamaica might be his most viable path toward the World Cup.
