The Chicago Bulls have multiple players who could still be up for grabs on the trade market. However, the one they appear most interested in unloading is Nikola Vucevic. The former All-Star center has remained a steady presence for them since the trade in 2021. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to change their fortunes in the win-loss column. Now 34 years old, and with the Bulls shifting to a youth movement, it makes sense to unload him while the team can still get something in return.
As is always the problem in these situations, finding a suitor hasn’t been easy. Not many organizations around the NBA have cap space. That, and his long-standing reputation as a defensive liability, has left Vucevic without options for a new home. Golden State is out. Boston never felt realistic. Nobody is left. However, that may change. NBA insider Jeff Weinbach believes there is one team that could shift in the center’s direction depending on how things shake out during the summer league.
That is the Detroit Pistons.
“The market for Nikola Vučević has been quiet up to this point, but the Pistons are an intriguing team that could emerge as an under-the-radar suitor for Chicago’s skillful center.
Detroit would value an experienced stretch five of Vučević’s skill set, and the 2x All-Star would be capable of playing alongside Jalen Duren in potential double big lineups.”
Detroit could make great use of Nikola Vucevic.
The Pistons had one of the most balanced lineups in the NBA last season, with nine players averaging double-digit points. Jalen Duren handled things in the middle, giving them solid rebounding and defense. Sadly, the team’s lack of depth in the frontcourt hurt them in the playoffs. Nikola Vucevic would instantly change that. Not only is he another excellent rebounder, but he’s a much better scorer than Duren and offers another element with his three-point range. Isaiah Stewart could be an option in a player swap. His contract is somewhat close to Vucevic’s. The key difference is he’s signed through 2027-2028 and is 24 years old. He fits the Bulls’ timeline far better. Much depends on whether the Pistons feel a tweak is needed.
