In one of the more under-the-radar trades of the NBA offseason, the Miami Heat have parted ways with Duncan Robinson.
The former Michigan standout, who was the definition of an underdog, was shipped to the Detroit Pistons as part of a sign-and-trade acquisition. Robinson played at the DIII level before finishing his college career with the Wolverines.
He ultimately went undrafted, but ended up turning a two-way contract into a seven-year stint with Miami, leaving with the franchise record for threes. He and the Pistons have reportedly agreed on a three-year deal worth $48 million.
While it was a move that most around South Beach saw coming, it doesn’t make it hurt any less.
Miami’s all-star guard, Tyler Herro, who the Heat drafted one year after adding Robinson, took to Instagram to send a parting message to his now-former teammate.
“Heat legend. my dawg. love,” wrote Herro.
In the six years they played together, Herro and Robinson were a part of two NBA Finals runs in 2019-20 and 2022-23, while also appearing in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021-22.
In exchange for parting with Robinson, the Heat will receive Simone Fontecchio who has shown flashes both in the NBA and with the Italian national team.
During the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Fontecchio averaged 19.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in four games, while shooting 45% from three. He has had a limited role in the NBA in his four seasons, but the 29-year-old did average 1.4 points per game in 16 games with the Pistons in 2023-24.
This past season, he appeared in 75 games, playing 16.5 minutes per game and averaging 5.9 points and 2.9 rebounds on 40.2% shooting and 33.5% shooting from three.
