Arrowheadlines: The Chiefs’ Potential Move to Trade Skyy Moore

The latest

Only one team in history has made four straight Super Bowls, and that is the Chiefs’ bitter AFC rivals, the Buffalo Bills. While the Bills didn’t end up winning any of those games, they still are the benchmark for history. With the Chiefs looking to bounce back in 2025, it has to be known within the organization that this goal is reachable.

However, former general manager of the New York Jets turned analyst Mike Tannenbaum revealed the one player who has the chance to stand between quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs franchise, and history.

“Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, because of their style of play,” Tannenbaum said on ESPN’s Get Up.

June 29, 1983. Delaney, only 24 years old and two years into his NFL career, gave his life while trying to save three children from drowning.

The children were struggling in a man-made pond in Monroe, Louisiana. Delaney didn’t hesitate to help.

“I can’t swim good, but I’ve got to save those kids,” he said. “If I don’t come up, get somebody.”

I still remember seeing the AP article in the newspaper the next day, 42 years ago. I can picture where I was standing when I flipped to the page and read the story for the first time.

He was one of the bright young stars of the league. The second-round pick from Northwestern State rushed for 1,121 yards as a rookie in 1981, giving Kansas City its first winning record since 1973.

In a recent ranking of the Top 30 players in National Football League history who haven’t won a Super Bowl, created by CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo, the Chiefs legend found himself cracking the Top 10. While the appreciation of Gonzalez’s game is there, a Super Bowl ring has never graced the legend’s finger. Gonzalez ranked eighth.

“Best chance: Despite starring on several talented Chiefs teams, Gonzalez’s first playoff win did not come until his 16th season. A member of the Falcons by that time, Gonzalez’s 10-yard touchdown reception gave Atlanta a 10-point lead over the 49ers in the divisional round of the 2012 playoffs,” DeArdo wrote.

“The Falcons were unable to hang onto their lead, however, as two touchdowns by Frank Gore (another great player that didn’t win a Super Bowl) lifted San Francisco to a 28-24 win. Gonzalez retired after the following season as the most prolific tight end in NFL history.”

7. Veterans with a Vengeance

This isn’t a young, naive team trying to figure it out—they’re battle-tested. And those who’ve seen both triumph and heartbreak know how to keep things steady when it matters.

The last time Mecole Hardman tried to make his way outside of Kansas City, things didn’t work out too well. Fortunately, he’s making a splash in his first official offseason with the Green Bay Packers.

Spring practice and minicamp results should be taken with a grain of salt, but the Packers are very impressed with what they see from Hardman so far. It’s sounding like a much different experience than Hardman’s last free agent run with the New York Jets.

Mecole Hardman’s attempt to forge a path with the Packers is starting out well.

Hardman signed a one-year deal with Green Bay in free agency and has put up multiple highlight-worthy plays for the Packers in practice. The Packers’ own social media team has been sharing clips of Hardman making his presence (and speed) felt on offense, as illustrated by this downfield catch of a 70-yard throw from Jordan Love:

Skyy Moore is Chiefs’ top trade candidate

The Chiefs seemed to be done with Moore fairly early in the experiment, but practically confirmed that sentiment in the 2025 offseason. Drafting another wideout for the sixth consecutive season makes Moore significantly closer to the practice squad than the starting lineup. Kansas City is likely already viewing him as a cut candidate, but with just one year remaining on his deal, Veach could look to take another look at his market value.

Around the NFL

“There’s always something out there to do better,” Surtain said at his football camp Saturday, via DNVR Sports’ Zac Stevens. “I mean, why not get another [DPOY]? Why not get more All-Pro honors further on in my career? But I think the main goal is to win a Super Bowl. At the end of the day, that’s what I play the game for is to win, so I think that’s the angle for me.”

In that vein, Manning outlined to reporters at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, La., how he’s been preparing for the 2025 season. Specifically, he pointed to two NFL quarterbacks whose tape he’s been studying.

“I’m watching a lot of Josh Allen and Joe Burrow right now. Those are my guys,” Manning said via On Texas Football. “They’re dogs. I’ve watched some of their college film. They’re just good players, elite competitors and fun to watch.”

It’s a curious pair of choices. While both have become elite professional quarterbacks, only Burrow—an easy choice on any list of the greatest college signal-callers of all-time—found true NCAA success. Allen, on the other hand, posted shaky numbers for mediocre Wyoming teams—though his physical tools encouraged the Bills to defy public apprehension and take him No. 7 in the 2018 draft.

In case you missed it on Arrowhead Pride

1. Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs

Like Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots teams before them, the Kansas City Chiefs are the masters of situational football. The Chiefs played in 12 one-score games last season, including the playoffs, and won all of them. They found a way to reach the Super Bowl for the third straight season because Andy Reid has his entire team prepared for any situation.

The Chiefs ranked 17th in PFF offensive grade during the first three quarters of games but slotted into fourth in that same category in the fourth quarter and overtime. They simply find ways to step up their game despite their flaws, injuries and lack of explosiveness. That’s a testament to Reid’s levelheaded approach to the game and wealth of experience.

My take

With Belichick out of the league, Reid deserves his flowers as the top returning head coach. Regardless of how Super Bowl LIX played out, Reid has pushed the Chiefs to the playoffs in all but one season (2014) since he arrived in Kansas City in 2013. He has also guided the club to seven straight AFC Championship games, five Super Bowl appearances and three championships.

Before I proceed with some quick thoughts on the rest of the list, I would like to address my concern regarding the Associated Press (AP) NFL Coach of the Year award.
