Manchester United have been in pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo since early this month, with the 25-year-old winger expressing his desire to make the switch, despite also attracting attention from Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
Mbeumo had a standout campaign with Brentford, netting 20 goals in the Premier League. His impressive form made him a top target for Newcastle, but his high salary expectations and Brentford’s steep valuation caused the Magpies to reconsider, leaving the door open for United to move ahead in the race.
Although Manchester United’s opening offer of £45 million plus an additional £10 million in performance-based add-ons was turned down by Brentford, discussions between both clubs have continued. A new bid, reportedly exceeding £60 million, has pushed negotiations close to completion.
talkSPORT reports that Mbeumo is scheduled for a medical at Old Trafford next week, as Manchester United look to seal the deal. He is expected to earn around £200,000 per week, a wage package that reportedly deterred Newcastle from further involvement.
Since withdrawing from the Mbeumo chase, Newcastle have shifted focus to Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga. They’ve submitted an offer for the Swedish winger, though it was swiftly rejected. Despite this, Newcastle remain keen, though Forest are reluctant to let Elanga go and have placed a high value of around £60 million on the player — a fee that could require Newcastle to return with a stronger bid or consider alternative targets.
Other players such as Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, and Johan Bakayoko are also being considered by Newcastle as they aim to strengthen the right side of their attack.
Interestingly, a successful move for Elanga would also benefit Manchester United financially due to a sell-on clause included in the deal when they sold him to Forest in 2023 for approximately £15 million plus add-ons.
As of now, Manchester United have not issued any official announcement confirming the signing of Mbeumo, nor has he been assigned a squad number. Reports of Ruben Amorim announcing a signing appear to be unfounded, as he is currently the manager of Sporting CP and has no direct connection to United.
Mbeumo, a dynamic Cameroonian winger who can operate across the frontline, would add pace, versatility, and goals to United’s attacking options. If the move goes through, he will join a competitive pool that includes Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo, and possibly Mason Greenwood, should the club decide to reintegrate him into the squad.
