Rúben Amorim is heading into what could be the most defining chapter of his managerial journey, tasked with reviving a Manchester United side that has fallen far from its past dominance. Appointed in November of last year, the Portuguese coach struggled to make a meaningful impact, with the team slumping to a bottom-half finish in the Premier League. His efforts were limited by the lack of reinforcements, with only Patrick Dorgu added to the squad during the January window.
Now, however, the landscape has shifted. This summer gives Amorim the freedom to shape the squad in his image. The club’s hierarchy, including INEOS and Dan Ashworth, have wasted no time in supporting his vision by actively pursuing reinforcements across the pitch.
In midfield, Hayden Hackney remains high on United’s list, having been closely watched during the U21 Euros. The young Englishman is seen as a promising option to bolster depth and quality in the centre of the park.
Meanwhile, interest in Hugo Ekitiké has cooled off. Despite initial enthusiasm, talks have stalled after it emerged the French striker would cost £84 million — a figure the club appears unwilling to meet.
In attack, all eyes are now on Bryan Mbeumo. United had their initial £55 million bid rejected, but a revised offer of £60 million is under consideration. The Brentford forward, who scored 20 league goals last season, is expected to undergo a medical next week, potentially becoming the second arrival of the window after Matheus Cunha joined from Wolves for £42.5 million. Mbeumo’s addition could bring some much-needed firepower to a frontline that lacked consistency last season.
Still, as valuable as Mbeumo may be, the real game-changer might be found in defence. United are reportedly making progress in their bid to land Barcelona’s Ronald Araújo. A fee of £38 million has been mentioned — a price viewed as a bargain for a defender of his caliber. Araújo’s composure on the ball and his 92% pass completion rate, including 3.1 progressive passes into the final third per 90 minutes, make him an ideal fit for Amorim’s tactical setup. With Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelöf already departing, and with concerns over Lisandro Martínez’s fitness and Raphaël Varane’s future, reinforcing the backline is crucial.
Bayern Munich and Juventus are also monitoring the situation, but United appear to be ahead in the race for the Uruguayan, who has been described as a “monster” by teammate Eric Garcia. His arrival could anchor a new-look defence, and he’s already being discussed as potential captain material at Old Trafford.
Other targets remain in play as well. Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović has been linked, possibly in a deal involving Jadon Sancho. Rafael Leão of AC Milan is another attacking option, especially if Marcus Rashford — currently on loan at Aston Villa — is moved on permanently. Felix Nmecha of Dortmund is also being monitored as a versatile midfield addition.
With Amorim finally getting the resources he needs, this summer could prove to be the turning point not just for his reign, but for the club’s future. While attacking signings will improve firepower, strengthening the spine of the team — particularly at centre-back — may be the key to restoring Manchester United’s competitiveness.
