Mark Vientos, who will be activated later today after completing his rehab assignment for his hamstring strain, will take Jared Young’s place on the roster, according to SNY’s Andy Martino.
The choice was clearly between Young and Ronny Mauricio, but the Mets opted to keep the latter, likely due to a few reasons. Mauricio offers more defensive flexibility, as he is able to play second base, third base, and shortstop, which is even more valuable after the demotion of Luisangel Acuña earlier this week. At the plate, Mauricio has been okay, earning a .226/.273/.403 (91 wRC+) line, but he has pretty severe splits. The switch hitter is hitting .277/.320/.511 as a lefty vs. righties, and hitting .067/.125/.067 as a right handed batter vs. lefties, something that has been an issue for him throughout his career. With the return of Vientos, it is possible that Mauricio is further sheltered against left handed pitching, as he can help hold down that side of the designated hitter platoon until Jesse Winker returns.
Young, on the other hand, struggled to get going in his first taste of the big leagues since returning from his stint in South Korea in 2024. He hit .171/.227/.415 (79 wRC+) while exclusively designated hitting.
Vientos will be a big boon for a bottom of the lineup that has been rather feckless this month, helping support a strong top five of Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil.
