Aaron Boone looking ahead
The New York Yankees need an infielder at the trade deadline, and there so happens to potentially be one available in the form of Eugenio Suarez. If the Arizona Diamondbacks plan to sell, Suarez would be the perfect addition, as he has massive power in his right-handed bat and has been a proven veteran throughout his career.
For the Yankees to get Suarez, however, they’ll have to hope that the Diamondbacks struggle a bit over the next few weeks. Arizona, sitting at 41-39, could still be in the playoffs. While the National League is loaded, and they aren’t in the playoff picture right now, all the Diamondbacks need is a few games to go their way.
However, when searching for potential trade options, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic proposed the trade idea for the Yankees to land him. He added that Suarez should be the Yankees’ top trade target, but other teams around the league will likely have better offers for New York.
“If the Diamondbacks sell, Eugenio Suárez should be the No. 1 target for the Yankees. One issue with Suárez is many teams with better prospects will likely be interested in him. Do the Yankees have enough to land what could be the best player available? On a lesser level, Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon could be an option. He kind of fits the Yankee mold. He hits the ball extremely hard, is a good defender, and would frustrate the hell out of the fan base because he strikes out a lot,” he wrote .
What Would Eugenio Suarez Bring to Yankees?
When searching for trade options around Major League Baseball, ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel recently named Suarez as a potential candidate.
They also wrote that the New York Yankees are among the best fits, naming some other teams, too. They gave him a 50% chance to be traded, which is somewhat high at the end of June.
“Suarez is in a contract year and, despite turning 34 years old before the trade deadline, is sitting near career highs in isolated power and wRC+ (which measures overall performance). His fielding metrics have declined in recent years, but he’s still an acceptable defender at third base. Even if the Diamondbacks don’t offload their free agents-to-be, Suarez could move because they have Jordan Lawlar raking in Triple-A and primed to take over at third,” they wrote .
Eugenio Suarez Adds More Power to Yankees Lineup
Suarez recently hit his 300th career home run, showcasing the type of player he’s been throughout his career. For the New York Yankees to be able to add a player who has 25 home runs this season and has hit 30 in three of the past four years would be a giant win at the deadline.
Regarding what Suarez has accomplished throughout his career, the Yankees would also love to add a player who is clearly grateful for his time in the show. He spoke about hitting his 300th home run recently, saying that he’s just happy to be living out his dream.
“[I’m] blessed,” Suarez said to Dbacks.TV’s Todd Walsh postgame. “This is the game. I feel so, so proud of myself.
“I’ve been working so hard all my career and [to] see that, put everything on the field, try to help my team win games. And [to come] here and do it in front of my wife and my daughter, they can watch me so it’s even more special.
“It’s something that I always dreamed, and today the dream comes true. A little guy from Venezuela… hit 300 homers right now in the big leagues. It’s awesome, and I feel so blessed,” Suárez said.
