The Chicago Bulls face another stiff challenge going into the draft this year. They haven’t picked high for years, continually haunted by the Patrick Williams selection. Arturas Karnisovas has tried to assemble a strong roster with picks outside the top 10. He may have had some good fortune with Matas Buzelis last year. He’ll need more of that in a 2025 draft that appears light on can’t-miss prospects. There are some rumors that the team could look to move up if the right player becomes available. However, that hasn’t really been something Karnisovas is known for.
Team insider K.C. Johnson gave an update on Chicago Sports Net. From everything he’s heard, a trade is unlikely. They won’t give it up for a veteran and won’t package it, trying to jump into the top 10. They believe they can get a good player at that spot. In fact, Karnisovas appears to have two names in mind once the Bulls are on the clock: South Carolina power forward Collin Murray-Boyles and French standout Noa Essengue. That indicates Chicago intends to get more size and athleticism in their frontcourt.
Arturas Karnisovas, for all his flaws, has a sharp eye.
Murray-Boyles was a massive presence for the Gamecocks this past season. He averaged 16.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. What stood out most was his defensive presence, notching 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks as well. He shot a highly efficient 58.6% from the field. Experts agree he is a defensive specialist who will wear opposing scorers down while also being a strong facilitator in the passing game. Essengue is more of an offensive presence. He has great athleticism for his size, has a broad repertoire for driving to the basket, and is a good passer. His shooting also took a step forward last season. The big concern with him is size. At 6’10, 194 lbs, he is too thin for the NBA right now.
History says Arturas Karnisovas is at his best when dipping into the international market. He helped Denver unearth Rudy Gobert, Nikola Jokic, and Jamal Murray. It will be interesting to see how the board unfolds. In a draft like this, there are always surprises.
