For the past few years, the NBA Greatest of All Time (GOAT) debate has been centered around two players: former Chicago Bulls guard Michael Jordan and Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James.
Fans compare and contrast the perennial All-Stars’ accolades, championships and impact on the sport to determine their best player. James’ former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate, Iman Shumpert, gave his answer to both sides of the debate.
“When you talk about accolades, I get it, but to catch Jordan’s record and take a few years off, but I can’t put anybody past Michael Jordan,” Shumpert said during a recent episode of the “Dan Patrick Show.”
Many consider Jordan the greatest because of his 6-0 record in the NBA Finals and impressive postseason success against all-time greats such as Magic Johnson, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley and John Stockton. Furthermore, Shumpert’s statement could only intensify the strong argument that Jordan is the NBA’s greatest player.
“I’m more ranking on winning than age,” Shumpert added. “Jordan will always be my GOAT, but I totally understand the argument, and I think it’s even more special because I got to play with LeBron and be a part of that conversation.”
However, before coming to this distinction, he said he thinks James is one of the best to do it, even though he doesn’t consider him his best player. The former player noted that he thinks James is a great player because he excels on the court.
Shumpert added that James can do it all, from shooting 3-pointers well to driving to the basket and throwing down slam dunks.
“You’re talking about someone that knows the playbook of all the coaches in the NBA,” he concluded. “I’ve never seen a basketball mind get to meet up with such a dominant and physical form before LeBron James.”
