Chiefs Kick 2 Vets to Curb to Make Room for Minicamp Standouts

Mandatory minicamp is officially over for the Kansas City Chiefs, and we’re getting a better idea of what the roster could look like once training camp rolls around. This was a great chance for the coaching staff to evaluate new additions and bring players in for tryouts, ensuring no stone is left unturned.

In that spirit, the organization hosted four guys for tryouts earlier this week, including a familiar face in tight end Geor’Quarius Spivey out of TCU, who spent last summer with the Chiefs as well.

Following the tryout, Kansas City officially signed Spivey and center Joey Lombard, cutting a pair of veteran offensive players in the process.

Chiefs Waive Two Vets While Signing Two More

As reported by Chiefs insider Nick Jacobs, Kansas City waived tight end Kevin Foelsch and offensive guard Tremayne Anchrum. Neither player ever appeared in a game for the team, and neither was expected to make the team, especially considering how deep the Chiefs are at each respective position.

Anchrum was originally a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams, with whom he won a Super Bowl. Foelsch was undrafted and spent most of 2024 on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad, though he was released prior to their Super Bowl victory.

They’ll both have ample opportunity to catch on with another team before training camp, especially once injuries start piling up around the league. Spivey and Lombard likely won’t make the final roster, though they both have opportunities to stick around on the practice squad should they perform well in the fall.

These minor transactions don’t have a major impact on a team’s outlook, though it’s still good to see the Chiefs actively seeking out depth and giving guys opportunities. With training camp slated to begin in roughly one month, all will be focused on getting back to the big game and winning it this time.

For now, it’ll be interesting to see what unexpected players break out this summer and demand a roster spot. Perhaps Spivey or Lombard will be one of them, making these worthy moves.

The Miami Dolphins opened the week with a trade of linebacker Jaelan Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles. The move seemed to indicate the team was starting to be sellers at the NFL trade deadline. However, as Tuesday’s 4 p.m. Eastern deadline approached and deals were announced across the league, the Dolphins were absent from the moves. Now that the deadline has passed, Miami did not make any moves beyond the Phillips deal.
