Viktor Gyökeres is reportedly on the verge of turning down a potential move to Manchester United, as the Sporting CP striker is believed to be holding out for what he calls his ‘dream’ transfer — a move to Arsenal.
The 27-year-old Swedish forward has been attracting interest from several European clubs following a standout season in Portugal, but it appears his heart is set on a switch to North London, where he hopes to compete in the UEFA Champions League.
Despite Manchester United having already opened preliminary discussions over signing Gyökeres, sources close to the player suggest his representatives have made it clear to United’s hierarchy that their client is not interested in joining them.
The Red Devils, who are undergoing a transitional period under their current management, had identified Gyökeres as a potential addition to their forward line in a bid to strengthen their squad for next season.
However, their absence from European competition next term — having finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League and suffering defeat in the Europa League final — has made their proposal less appealing to the striker.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s involvement in next season’s Champions League has made them a far more attractive destination in the eyes of the Sporting striker. Gyökeres reportedly views a move to the Emirates Stadium as a significant career milestone and an opportunity to compete at the highest level of European football.
Though the Gunners are yet to make an official bid, insiders claim that the Swedish international would prioritize Arsenal over any other option should a concrete offer arrive.
That said, it remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta views Gyökeres as his primary candidate to lead Arsenal’s attack next season.
Current reports suggest that Arteta may favor RB Leipzig’s 22-year-old striker Benjamin Sesko, who has also been linked with a move to North London. Sporting are believed to value Gyökeres at around €80 million (£68 million), a fee that might complicate negotiations for any interested club.
Adding to the speculation, when recently asked about the growing rumors linking him to Arsenal, Gyökeres reportedly offered a one-word response that hinted at his desire for the move, further fuelling excitement among Arsenal supporters and leaving Manchester United’s hopes of securing his signature looking increasingly unlikely.
