Kansas City Chiefs sign familiar face after UFL success to reinforce depth at position that already faces injury woes

Aug 22, 2024; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Kansas City Chiefs tight end Geor'Quarius Spivey (85) leaves the field after the game against the Chicago Bears at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The Kansas City Chiefs have signed a familiar face after a successful tryout at mandatory minicamp.

This actually marked the third time that TE Geor’Quarius Spivey has tried out for the Chiefs and the second time he’s been signed following a tryout. He was initially among the 37 rookie minicamp tryouts in 2024 after going undrafted in the NFL Draft. He had a tryout at training camp last year that ultimately landed him on the 90-man offseason roster through the preseason. He didn’t make it through 53-man roster cuts and wasn’t signed to the practice squad following his release.Spivey’s agency, AthElite Agency, was the first to announce the news.

Spivey spent his college career with Mississippi State Bulldogs and the TCU Horned Frogs, but didn’t have a whole lot of college production. He was ruled ineligible to play during his final season by the NCAA after they denied his graduate transfer waiver. The 6-foot-5 and 240-pound tight end finished his college career with 28 catches on 52 targets for 298 yards and one touchdown.

This past spring, Spivey played for the UFL’s Houston Roughnecks, where he caught seven passes on 13 targets for 65 yards.

The reality of the situation here is that the Chiefs are dealing with some injuries at the tight end position. UDFAs Jake Briningstool and Tre Watson have been sidelined by ailments. While Jared Wiley is expected to be OK for training camp, he’s still recovering from his 2024 ACL injury and wearing a heavy brace during practice. The team also recently signed TE Kevin Foelsch, but the injury situation is such that they need more depth. It’s a big bonus that a player like Spivey already has some familiarity with the playbook, terminology, and can really slot in wherever they might need him.

A corresponding move has not yet been announced at this time, but we should soon know more once the NFL’s daily personnel notice is released.
