Xavi Simons makes Tottenham transfer stance clear as £60m demand made - Gentle Soccer

Dutch international Xavi Simons has reportedly informed RB Leipzig of his desire to leave the Bundesliga club this summer, intensifying speculation about a potential move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. The 22-year-old midfielder is believed to be seeking a new challenge after what he feels has been a completed development phase at the Red Bull Arena.

According to fresh reports, Tottenham are showing “genuine interest” in Simons, with new head coach Thomas Frank eager to reshape the squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. While no formal discussions have taken place and no official bid has been submitted, insiders suggest that a move to North London could be a story to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Simons initially joined RB Leipzig on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023 and impressed during his first spell in Germany. His performances convinced Leipzig to make the deal permanent in January 2025, for a reported fee of £42.6 million. Since then, he has delivered solid numbers—scoring 21 goals and recording 23 assists in 76 appearances across all competitions.

Despite Simons’ individual brilliance, RB Leipzig endured a hugely disappointing 2024/25 season, finishing in seventh place—marking their worst Bundesliga campaign since they were promoted in 2016. Crucially, the club failed to secure qualification for any European competition, a blow that may have influenced Simons’ decision to seek a move elsewhere.

According to The Athletic, Simons has already communicated his intentions to leave this summer, believing that he has outgrown his current environment. Leipzig are reportedly open to selling the talented playmaker, but they are holding out for a fee in the region of £59.7 million and are unlikely to entertain offers below that valuation. With two years remaining on his current contract, the German side still hold a strong negotiating position.

In an interview with Sky Sports Germany back in April, Simons dropped hints about his ambitions. He stated: “I’m still a young player, I have many dreams and the club knows that. But right now, the most important thing for me is to play well in the upcoming games.” His comments, while cautious, suggested that he was already contemplating a move away from Leipzig at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are actively looking to reinforce their squad ahead of their return to the UEFA Champions League. Although Spurs endured a disappointing domestic campaign—finishing 17th in the Premier League—they pulled off an unexpected triumph in the UEFA Europa League. That success has earned them a spot back in Europe’s top-tier competition for the first time since 2022.

However, that European success was not enough to save Ange Postecoglou’s job. Earlier this month, Tottenham confirmed that they had parted ways with the Australian manager. In a bold and ambitious move, the North London club turned to Brentford’s Thomas Frank as Postecoglou’s successor. Spurs paid a reported £10 million in compensation to lure Frank from West London, with the Danish coach signing a three-year contract to lead the project at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Now, with Frank at the helm and the club preparing for a busy summer transfer window, attention has turned to the type of players he will bring in to fit his system. Xavi Simons, with his flair, creativity, and eye for goal, could prove to be a marquee signing—offering Spurs both quality and versatility in midfield or out wide.

Whether Tottenham will meet Leipzig’s asking price remains to be seen, but with Simons clearly eager for a new challenge and Spurs back in the Champions League, a move to North London could appeal to both parties. This developing story may well be one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas.
