UPDATE!! Padres-Dodgers rivalry escalates after manager’s NSFW reaction to Andy Pages’ pain

Mike Shildt had some choice words for Pages.

San Diego Padres v Arizona Diamondbacks

Monday’s game between the Dodgers and Padres had a little bit of everything. Shohei Ohtani made his return to the mound.

The Dodgers offense recorded eight hits off Dylan Cease. And, lastly, it also featured a bit of a kerfuffle between both teams that ended up not being much of anything.

But just because it didn’t result in anything happening doesn’t mean that it wasn’t entertaining.

Padres manager’s NSFW reaction to Dodgers star Andy Pages’ frustration was ridiculous

In the fourth inning, Cease was facing off against Andy Pages with the Dodgers’ leading 3-2, and promptly plunked Pages in the back with an 0-1 fastball.

After being hit, Pages just stood on the plate staring at Cease, who briefly stared back at Pages before shrugging and walking back to the mound.

That staring contest resulted in a lot of movement, as both teams moved to the top of their dugout rail and both bullpen doors opened.

And while Pages eventually got off the plate and went to first base, Padres manager Mike Shildt still found time to have an NSFW reaction to Pages’ demonstrative reaction.

Sheesh.

After the game, Pages told ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez that he felt that Cease threw at him intentionally because the Dodgers had been relaying signs from second base earlier in the game.

But, regardless of whether the plunking was intentional or not, Pages and Shildt’s reactions just add more fire to a rivalry that’s one of baseball’s best.

They’ve faced off in the postseason in 2020, 2022 and 2024, and play each other 13 times in the regular season. Every game between them seems to be a powder keg waiting to explode.

Even if Shildt didn’t admit it after the game, yesterday’s matchup likely meant a bit more to the Padres. The Padres had tagged Ohtani for a run in his Dodgers’ pitching debut, but were in the midst of giving their lead away at the time of Cease’s hit by pitch.

Things were teetering away from the Padres, and Shildt was watching it happen in real time. And it probably didn’t help that Cease had plunked Pages, who is in the midst of a breakout season.

After a 1-for-2 showing yesterday, Pages is now hitting .282 on the year with 13 home runs and 46 RBI in 69 games.

It’s honestly a bit surprising the benches didn’t clear, especially considering how things went last year when Will Smith called Jurickson Profar “irrelevant” after a bench clearing brawl that April.

After the game, Manny Machado told reporters that the Dodgers have “way more superstars over there if we want to hit somebody.” Stay tuned.
