The discussions come shortly after the team declined the New York Knicks’ request to interview Donovan for their head coaching vacancy. This has sparked urgency in the Bulls to think about the future.
Donovan has been at the helm in Chicago for five seasons, compiling a 195–205 record. He led the Bulls to a playoff appearance in 2022.
His current deal, which reportedly has one year remaining, stems from a previous extension agreed upon before the 2022–23 season but not publicly announced until late November of that year.
With veterans Zach LaVine and Alex Caruso moved, the Bulls are entering a retooling phase focused on staying competitive while building around a younger core.
That core features Coby White, rookie Matas Buzelis, and likely Josh Giddey, who is expected to remain in Chicago.
Before joining the Bulls, Donovan coached the Oklahoma City Thunder for five seasons and won two NCAA championships at Florida.
