DONE DEAL: Manchester United finally completes double transfer signings after Gyokeres’ snub- The players are both ready to be announced

Manchester United are actively searching for a top-quality striker in the current transfer window, aiming to address last season’s shortcomings in front of goal. The Red Devils only managed 44 goals in the Premier League and need a more reliable finisher to lead their attack. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, despite their potential, delivered just seven league goals between them, prompting the need for a major upgrade.

Their pursuit of Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres hit a roadblock after the Swedish striker expressed a preference for Arsenal, where Champions League football and life in London are major attractions. However, reports from A Bola suggest that United are still monitoring the situation and remain alert to any changes in the negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting. Although Gyokeres is inclined to join the Gunners, the deal is not yet done, as Arsenal are also considering other options such as RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Despite United’s continued interest, they are reportedly only willing to act if Arsenal completely withdraw from the race. The situation is further complicated by Juventus’ interest in the player, which could make United’s chances even slimmer. Given all this, many believe the Red Devils should now shift focus and avoid being drawn into another protracted and ultimately unsuccessful pursuit.

Gyokeres had an extraordinary 2024/25 campaign, netting 54 goals and providing 13 assists in 52 appearances. Sporting are open to selling him for £68 million, but United no longer hold any significant advantage in the race for his signature. With the player clearly prioritising Champions League football—a promise United cannot currently make—it may be time to look elsewhere.

Manager Ruben Amorim has previously made it clear that he prefers players who are genuinely motivated to join the club, rather than those drawn purely by European competition. That principle could influence the direction of United’s striker hunt, especially as they weigh their next move.

Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt has emerged as a promising alternative. The 22-year-old striker had a strong season in the Bundesliga, scoring 17 goals and recording 6 assists. Reports claim that Ekitike has a strong desire to join Manchester United, even in the absence of Champions League football. However, Frankfurt are demanding around £85 million, a steep price for a player still developing at the top level.

Another name on the list is Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian international, despite an injury-hit season, still managed to score 17 goals. His release clause is set at £64 million, which is more manageable than Ekitike’s fee. The primary obstacle is his weekly wage demand of £350,000, though it’s believed Osimhen harbours a deep desire to play for United. That dream could help convince him to lower his salary expectations.

With Gyokeres looking increasingly out of reach and Juventus now in the picture, United may be wise to end their pursuit before it drags on. Ekitike brings youth, energy, and clear intent, while Osimhen offers world-class experience and physicality. Both options align more closely with Amorim’s long-term vision and could provide the firepower United so badly need. The club must now decide whether to go all-in for one of these alternatives or risk coming up short once again.
