NEW YORK — Outfielder Jose Siri has suffered a setback in his recovery for a broken tibia, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters on Friday.

Siri has yet to begin a rehab assignment since fracturing his tibia against the Athletics on April 12. He was initially given a recovery timeline of 8-to-12 weeks.

Imaging showed that the healing was not up to the Mets’ hopes and Stearns described it as “a little bit of a setback.”

Tyrone Taylor has taken over a full-time role in center field for the Mets with Siri’s injury and has been a bright spot in the Mets’ defense.

Siri joined the Mets this offseason via a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Mets, in theory, have a crowded outfield when it’s healthy (Jesse Winker is also on the IL) but may look to add some depth after this news.
