Heat have the opportunity of a lifetime as superstar’s value hits rock bottom

Haywood Highsmith, Kevin Durant

The Miami Heat may be coming up on an extremely rare opportunity. Conversations seem to be growing that Kevin Durant’s trade value may not be nearly as high as initially expected this summer, and if that ends up being true, the Heat could be in a unique position to land one of the greatest scorers of all-time at a discount.

Durant’s legacy and status as one of the greatest to ever do it are already cemented. No one would question that. However, his current situation with the Suns is certainly a bit murky. Phoenix did not make the playoffs in 2024-25 despite sme very high preseason expectations. As such, they’re going to potentially be looking around for ways to retool around Devin Booker.

Bradley Beal’s contract is going to be extremely difficult to move given the no-trade clause attached to it. The rest of the Suns’ roster is already severely thin, so Durant probably makes the most sense to move in a trade.

The whispers we’re hearing within NBA circles right now suggest that KD’s value is steadily dropping, and that’s where the Miami Heat can enter the formula. This organization obviously has a rich history of a winning culture, and they’ve historically done more with their star players than almost any other franchise.

Durant could be a more affordable target for Miami than we thought

If you want an example, just look at what the Heat’s last era looked like after they brought on Jimmy Butler. Two NBA Finals appearances and one other deep playoff run as well. With that in mind, Durant’s talent can peak at an even higher level than Butler’s when he’s healthy.

Arranging number 35 alongside Bam Adebayo would have the potential to vault Miami back among the elites when you talk about contending teams in the Eastern Conference. It’s obviously been a pretty up-and-down stretch for the Heat ever since their 2023 Finals appearance, and a splashy move like this could put them back on the right trajectory.

Miami could ease the pain of missing out on past stars like Damian Lillard and Donovan Mitchell if they’re able to make this happen. It’s not often you would talk about “buying low” when it comes to a player like Kevin Durant, but that’s precisely the opportunity the Heat may find themselves presented with in short order.

At the end of the day, part of what “Heat Culture” is built on is being willing to take risks and chasing greatness. Even at this stage of his career, Kevin Durant has enough left in the tank that the Miami Heat should be all over trading for him if the price is right.
