Dodgers Trade: To keep Mookie Betts, the Dodgers were forced to ABANDON pursuing this player in the winter trade market!

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series in 2024. However, the middle of their infield was oftentimes a question mark. The team has announced that Mookie Betts will be moving back to the infield, meaning a fan favorite could be on his way out of LA.

While listing Dodgers players whose futures changed after Betts was announced to move back to the infield, FanSided’s Katrina Stebbins noted that there may no longer be room for Gavin Lux on the roster.

“Lux’s future in LA seemed to be in imminent danger as soon as the Betts move was announced,” wrote Stebbins. “All indications (the Dodgers chasing Willy Adames for shortstop) point to Betts going to second instead of shortstop, which will immediately put Lux out of a job. If Pages gets a full-time role, there may be room for Lux on the bench, but he’d also be an effective trade piece.”

If the Dodgers had kept Betts in right field, they could sign a shortstop and Lux could man second base.

However, moving Betts to second base and adding a shortstop, as many expect, would mean Lux does not have a real role. He is arbitration-eligible for 2025 and 2026.

He could be kept as a bench piece, but his production in 2024 may not justify it.

“His performance this season was suboptimal, to say the least, he did get hot through a couple summer months and showed flashes of his old, top prospect potential,” wrote Stebbins. “But for a team that’s actively trying to optimize at every position, there may not be room for Lux on the roster anymore.”

Lux has spent all of his seasons in the big leagues with the Dodgers.

He was a part of two World Series titles. Fans would hate to see him go, but the Dodgers need better options at second base and shortstop.
