Former Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal will likely retire after signing a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox this spring.
Grandal, 36, spent just two months with the Red Sox before leaving the WooSox Tuesday in between a road series. The following day, Boston officially placed him on the restricted list.
“At the moment, it looks like he’s probably going to walk away and potentially hang them up,” WooSox manager Chad Tracy told MassLive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day earlier this week. “We talked (Monday), and I knew he was gonna pack up and go…his response was ‘it’s time to be dad.’”
Grandal hit .256 with two home runs, 16 runs batted in, and a .770 OPS in 23 games for Worcester. The veteran did not play in any big league games this season, but was briefly called up when Red Sox catcher Connor Wong broke his finger.
In the offseason, it was reported that Grandal was considering retirement before signing with the American League contenders. He had previously declined an offer from the Atlanta Braves last winter.
Grandal spent the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and hit .228 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs across 72 games.
Grandal wore Dodger blue from 2015 to 2018. It was during the backstop’s Dodgers tenure that he showed the rest of Major League Baseball his full potential.
Grandal was selected for his first All-Star appearance with the Dodgers and helped L.A. win four division titles and two National League pennants.
In four seasons with the Dodgers, Grandal slashed .238/.337/.453 with 89 homers, 245 RBIs, and a .790 OPS.
Grandal has played for the Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago White Sox, and Pittsburgh Pirates throughout his 13-year MLB career at the Major League level.
