Skyy Moore’s nightmare run with the Chiefs could be ending soon

Skyy Moore 2022 Player Profile | Reception Perception

Drafted 54th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, former Western Michigan standout Skyy Moore has yet to meet expectations. Over three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, he has recorded just 43 receptions, 494 receiving yards, and a single touchdown.

While there are never guarantees with draft picks, that level of production is underwhelming for an early Day 2 selection. Since then, the Chiefs have added a receiver in each subsequent draft—two of whom have already surpassed Moore on the depth chart. With that mounting pressure, serious questions arise about Moore’s future in Kansas City.

It’s still early in the offseason, but I suspect the Chiefs will carry six wide receivers on their 2025 roster. Among those, Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Hollywood Brown are entrenched as the top three.

Given his draft value, Jalen Royals is a safe bet to secure a roster spot as well. That leaves just two spots up for grabs among veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster, Skyy Moore, Nikko Remigio, Tyquan Thornton, and undrafted free agent Elijhah Badger. This is the slimmest margin for error Moore has faced since being drafted three years ago.

The writing is on the wall for Skyy Moore’s time in Kansas City

The good news for Moore is that, aside from Smith-Schuster, he is the most tenured receiver competing for a roster spot. He brings valuable —if somewhat underwhelming — experience and familiarity with Andy Reid’s offense, two factors that carry weight for offensive skill position players in Kansas City.

The bad news is that Smith-Schuster is the clear favorite to claim one of the remaining spots, and the final WR6 role will likely go to a player who can contribute on special teams. If Smith-Schuster secures his spot, that gives a notable edge to third-year receiver Nikko Remigio.

Fortunately for Moore, his chances could improve with the addition of undrafted running back Brashard Smith, who logged 58 returns during his college career at Miami and SMU. If Smith secures the return specialist role, it could put Nikko Remigio’s roster spot in jeopardy, given he has just two career receptions in the Chiefs’ offense.

Still, it’s fair to wonder if Moore has simply run out of chances after three underwhelming seasons. That WR6 spot might instead go to a fresh face like Tyquan Thornton, who joined the team last November on a practice squad deal. A true X receiver with 4.2 speed, Thornton could help fill the vertical threat void left by the departures of Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Watson.

Skyy Moore’s best chance to stick with the team in 2025 hinges on staying healthy. His 2024 season was cut short after a core muscle injury landed him on injured reserve in late October. The good news: Moore participated in Week 1 of OTAs and appears on track for a full return when training camp opens next month. Still, he’s on borrowed time, and soon we’ll find out how much of it will be spent at One Arrowhead Drive.
