A shocking trade has taken away an adorable idea Mets fans were sitting on.
The New York Mets have an elite closer for their bullpen in Edwin Diaz, as well as other relievers who have been successful so far this year.
With a reliever team ERA currently at 2.91, the bullpen has played a key role in helping them win games.
Although Diaz and the other relievers have fared well in 2025, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Mets should be done tinkering with the bullpen.
Unfortunately, one idea that could’ve been a fun family fit is now off the table.
On Thursday, May 29, it was announced that Diaz’s brother, Alexis Diaz, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cincinnati Reds reliever’s trade to a more elite team was very sudden.
After starting this season on the injured list, Diazhas since struggled to the point where he was demoted to the minor leagues on May 1. Despite the struggles, this trade ends some Mets fans’ hopes of a family reunion in the bullpen, which would’ve been beneficial for the team.
Shocking Dodgers-Reds trade takes away possible brotherly vibe and late-inning efficiency from the Mets
We probably already know that Edwin and Alexis Diaz share a good brotherly vibe on and off the field.
Just think back to the 2023 World Baseball Classic when Alexis was in tears after witnessing Edwin tear his patellar tendon on the mound.
Plus, even after they pitched against each other for the first time last September, they were both happy for each other, as they both were dominant in a game in which the Mets won, helping them on their way towards clinching a playoff spot.
It likely would’ve meant a lot to the Mets to have that amazing kind of familial vibe going through the clubhouse.
Maybe Alexis would’ve become an even better reliever again with the help of his older brother.
Those two could’ve easily been a good one-two punch for the late innings, and Alexis was apparently available at a lower price than ever.
Alexis has the potential to be just as sharp as his brother in the seventh or eighth innings. Yes, as of now, he hasn’t pitched effectively since coming off the IL, but overall, he is a solid pitcher. He is still young at 28 years old, and his overall career numbers aren’t bad, including a career ERA of 3.21 and a WHIP of 1.00 or below in the past few seasons before 2025.
To make this topic more interesting, there were some serious discussions in the fanbase (and among speculating writers) about the Mets wanting to acquire Alexis in 2023. One of those discussions involved potentially sending Alex Ramirez and Kevin Parada to Cincinnati in exchange for him, but that didn’t happen. Instead, he is now with the Dodgers, and some Mets fans’ hopes of a family reunion have gone out the window.
