Kansas City Chiefs‘ Super Bowl LIV-winning team member has seemingly announced his retirement from professional football.

Armani Watts, a 2018 fourth-round draft pick out of Texas A&M University, took to Instagram on Sunday, May 25, to announce his retirement from the NFL and other football leagues. This comes after the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts released him from a contract he signed in February.

“Thankful For The Opportunities That This Game Has Given Me,” Watts wrote, followed by a peace emoji.

While it’s not an explicit retirement announcement, a brief read through the responses to the post and his Instagram story shows those close to him take it as such. Some of his former teammates from the 2018 NFL Draft, such as Breeland Speaks, Dorian O’Daniel, and Derrick Nnadi, either commented on or liked the Instagram post.

Former Chiefs S Armani Watts appears to retire from professional football

Watts was a member of Chiefs GM Brett Veach’s inaugural draft class in Kansas City in 2018 and one of the more successful players from that class. He’s retiring after just seven seasons, but he only played five seasons in the NFL, which is actually two seasons longer than the average NFL career.

In 53 games with one start in Kansas City, Watts recorded 58 total tackles, two passes defended, two sacks, and a fumble recovery throughout his career. He had nearly 1,000 snaps on special teams with the Chiefs, compared to 282 defensive snaps over four seasons. Watts earned a Super Bowl ring with K.C. in Super Bowl LIV and also played in Super Bowl LV the following season.

Following the 2021 NFL season, Watts left the Chiefs to join the Indianapolis Colts. He never played a game with the Colts due to an ankle injury he suffered during a preseason against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That injury cost him the entire 2022 NFL season and ultimately any shot at returning to the league. Watts didn’t sign another NFL contract following the injury and was out of pro football until signing that deal with the Toronto Argonauts in February. With that opportunity not working out, it seems he’s ready to say goodbye to playing the game of football and start the next chapter.
