MEDICAL ONGOING: Arsenal Finalise £70m Double Signing as Medical Underway at Colney, Contract Agreed Until 2027, Andrea Berta Welcomes Second Arrival
Viktor Gyokeres has given a strong indication that his time at Sporting Lisbon could be coming to an end after helping the club secure a domestic double. The prolific Swedish striker has become one of Europe’s hottest properties this summer, with Arsenal showing serious interest in acquiring his services.
Gyokeres capped off an outstanding 2024/25 season by helping Sporting clinch the Portuguese Cup with a hard-fought win over Benfica, adding to their league triumph. Benfica initially took the lead through Orkun Kokcu, but Gyokeres equalised from the penalty spot in the 101st minute, forcing the game into extra time.
Goals from Conrad Harder and Francisco Trincao then secured a 3-1 victory for Sporting. Gyokeres finished his season with an impressive 53 goals and 13 assists in 51 matches, collecting two trophies along the way.
After the final whistle, all eyes turned to Gyokeres amid growing speculation about his future. When asked about a potential transfer, the 26-year-old remained cautious but hinted that a move could be on the horizon. “Let’s see,” he remarked. “It’s difficult for me to say anything because this is football and you never know what could happen in the summer. For me to commit to anything would be impossible right now.”
Pressed about the ongoing Arsenal links, he added, “I’ve just been focusing on finishing the season strongly because these last games meant a lot. If anything happens, we’ll see during the summer.”
According to Mirror Football, Arsenal are optimistic about signing Gyokeres if they meet Sporting’s £60 million valuation. The North London club are prepared to offer the striker over £200,000 per week to bring him in as the top-class finisher they’ve lacked. Both Sporting and the player had postponed any decisions until the season’s end and are now ready to engage with interested clubs — with Arsenal leading the chase.
Having finished second in the Premier League for a third consecutive season, Arsenal are eager to bolster their attack. Injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have highlighted the team’s lack of depth up front.
Sporting director Andrea Berta is prioritising a new striker, with Gyokeres emerging as Mikel Arteta’s preferred target ahead of RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. Arteta has openly stressed the need for more attacking firepower if Arsenal are to seriously compete for major trophies.
