Manchester United have completed their second summer signing of the season, as £80m biggest prospect in Europe set to be announced today as new Manchester United player

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta as a potential summer signing, according to French outlet L’Équipe. With the Red Devils looking to strengthen their attacking line-up in the upcoming transfer window, the 27-year-old striker has emerged as one of the options under consideration. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled to deliver consistent performances up front, prompting manager Ruben Amorim to explore more reliable alternatives.

Mateta, whose contract with Crystal Palace is set to expire in the summer of 2026, will enter its final year in July. The Frenchman has yet to commit to a new deal with the London club and is expected to wait for firm offers before making a decision on his future. He is particularly mindful that the 2025/26 season could be crucial for his aspirations to represent France in the next World Cup.

The former Mainz striker had a slow start in England but has thrived under manager Oliver Glasner. He has found the back of the net 36 times since the beginning of last season, with 17 of those goals coming in the current campaign. Known for his impressive 21 percent shot-to-goal conversion rate, Mateta has also drawn praise for his physical presence, intelligent hold-up play, and relentless pressing in the final third. With 114 Premier League appearances under his belt, he brings a wealth of experience at the top level.

Manchester United are also monitoring Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, who has scored 12 goals this season. However, concerns linger over his readiness to handle the pressures of top-flight football, especially after United’s recent gamble on young talents like Hojlund has yet to produce the desired results. Delap’s limited experience in the Premier League could be a disadvantage compared to Mateta’s proven track record.

Palace have reportedly set a £40 million price tag on Mateta, but with his contract running down, United may be able to negotiate a reduced fee. Given his form, age, and familiarity with English football, Mateta appears to be a smarter investment than taking another risk on an untested prospect.
