Davion Mitchell’s big finish might force Heat into unwanted position

Cleveland Cavaliers v Miami Heat - Game Four

As part of the Jimmy Butler trade earlier this year, the Miami Heat acquired Davion Mitchell from the Toronto Raptors. Nicknamed “Off Night,” it didn’t take long for Heat Nation to fall in love with Mitchell’s game— and he certainly lived up to that name, as well.

The gritty 6-foot guard provided Miami with much-needed point of attack defense on the perimeter. At the same time, he flourished under coach Erik Spoelstra as a playmaker in the team’s rotation.

Whether it was in a starting or bench role, Mitchell quickly became a crucial two-way asset in the Heat’s postseason push. He averaged 15.5 points and seven assists in their two road play-in victories, including some clutch plays down the stretch in each of them.

Additionally, he carried over that success into the NBA playoffs, averaging 15 points on an impressive 60% shooting from the field across four games.

Luckily for Mitchell, he made a name for himself while on a contract year right before hitting restricted free agency. And there should be plenty of suitors for his services.

The Heat will be able to match any offer Mitchell receives to retain him, although they will have to be smart to avoid financial limitations elsewhere to improve the roster. There is reportedly mutual interest in completing a deal.

Davion Mitchell had the best stretch of his career with the Miami Heat.

Recently, Mitchell was on an episode of “Inside the Heat,” where he expressed his admiration and excitement in joining the team.

“(The Heat) was always my number one option,” Mitchell said. “This was a ‘dream come true’ kind of thing.”

He also stated that he told his agent he wanted to get traded to Miami prior to this year’s trade deadline.

Mitchell finished his first stint with Miami averaging a career-high in points, assists, rebounds, steals and shooting efficiency. Across 30 regular season games, he averaged 10.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.4 steals on 50% shooting and 45% from 3-point range.

Hopefully that mutual interest in continuing this partnership will help be a deciding factor in Mitchell’s free agent decision. However, versatile two-way guards are usually sought after on the open market— and he certainly brought his stock up after some impressive level of play in South Beach this past season.

If another team with more cap space than the Heat targets his services, there could be some tough decisions made from Mitchell in the near future.
