The Los Angeles Dodgers have the third-best record in all of baseball and a lead in the fiercely competitive National League West division, but apparently that is not good enough.
Even amid its strong start, the team has been putting nostalgia to the side and doing everything it can to fortify a championship roster.
It recently released its two longest-tenured position players, Austin Barnes and Chris Taylor, in favor of younger roster additions.
And as the front office looks to clean the house wherever it can, more cuts could be imminent.
“The Dodgers’ bench was the weakest part of the roster from day one, and they finally did something about it,” FanSided’s Katrina Stebbins wrote of the recent moves.
“However, another roster crunch is right around the corner.” Predicting the players who “won’t be on the roster” by the end of the month, Stebbins singled out Miguel Rojas, another veteran position player who has struggled to contribute from the bench. In 71 at-bats so far this season, Rojas is slashing just .254/.274/.338 with a -0.1 WAR.
He’s also in the final $4 million season of his contract. “Just like Barnes and Taylor, he’s generally known as a solid clubhouse presence (at least with the Dodgers), but the bat isn’t up to snuff and his defense is the worst it’s been in years,” Stebbins wrote.
“The Dodgers even have a clear replacement for him in Triple-A in shortstop/utility infielder Alex Freeland, who could easily creep up on Rojas sooner than later.”
As the Dodgers continue their quest for a repeat World Series championship, it seems they are ready to create pathways for their best young talent, even if it means cutting ties with some veteran leaders.
Just based on the numbers, it looks like Rojas could be next.
