Chiefs Sign Former Super Bowl Champ Desperate to Save His Career

Kansas City Chiefs sign a veteran who could spice up the left guard competition on the 90-man offseason roster

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason has been full of roster turnover, though perhaps no position group has changed as much as the offensive line.

Following last year’s debacle at left tackle that saw four different players start, the Chiefs made it a priority to fix things. Kansas City losing All-Pro Joe Thuney was obviously a massive blow that’ll have big ramifications on the 2025 campaign. However, bringing in former San Francisco 49ers swing tackle Jaylon Moore and drafting Ohio State’s Josh Simmons should hopefully ease the drop-off.

That doesn’t mean the front office and coaching staff don’t want to keep searching for improvements, though, especially now that the team might have to rely on struggling 2024 second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia as a starter at guard. To help provide some depth, the Chiefs just signed a former Super Bowl champion with experience, who is still only 26 years old.

Chiefs Sign SB Champ Guard Tremayne Anchrum Ahead of OTAs

As reported by NFL insider Aaron Wilson, Kansas City signed offensive guard Tremayne Anchrum on Friday. Originally a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams, Anchrum appeared in 31 games with one start during his time there, even serving as a contributor on special teams.

He was let go after 2023 and was most recently on the Houston Texans’ practice squad. Anchrum has dealt with injuries in the past, but he still has the physical profile and knowledge that could help the Chiefs in a pinch.

Suamataia and Mike Caliendo will compete for the starting left guard job previously occupied by Thuney. Trey Smith has the right side held down, though you can never use too much offensive line depth. We’ve now seen the Chiefs lose two Super Bowls largely due to terrible line play, so it’s wise that Brett Veach wants to leave no stone unturned.

We’ll see if Anchrum even makes the roster, though he’s got intriguing upside at 6-foot-2, 314 pounds and could wind up being another steal.
