Chiefs Quarterback Could Follow Justin Reid to Saints

Ngày 4 tháng 11 năm 2024; Kansas City, Missouri, Hoa Kỳ; Cầu thủ an toàn Justin Reid (20) của Kansas City Chiefs khởi động trước trận đấu với Tampa Bay Buccaneers tại Sân vận động GEHA ở Sân vận động Arrowhead.

Earlier this offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs saw veteran safety Justin Reid leave the team in free agency and sign a three-year, $31.5 million deal with the New Orleans Saints including $22.5 million in guaranteed money.

Many Chiefs fans expected Reid to depart the organization after the team re-signed linebacker Nick Bolton to a three-year, $45 million deal. The veteran safety will look to build off what he did with the Chiefs, now in the Big Easy. However, could Reid bring another former Chief to the NFC South?

The Saints have one of the more interesting quarterback situations in the league after veteran Derek Carr shockingly retired from the NFL last week. With Carr hanging up the cleats, the Saints’ quarterback room consists of Tyler Shough (rookie), Spencer Rattler (second year), Jake Haener (third year), and Hunter Dekkers (undrafted free agent).

The Saints coaches likely hope that Shough wins the job after taking him in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. However, they could also use a veteran in their quarterback room. A perfect option for New Orleans is former Chiefs signal-caller Carson Wentz.

Former Chiefs QB Carson Wentz Could Be an Option For Saints After Derek Carr’s Retirement

Wentz, the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, has nine years of experience and was just the backup behind Patrick Mahomes this past season. Wentz didn’t play much in Kansas City, except for the regular season finale.

The veteran quarterback didn’t play well, completing 10-of-17 passes for 98 scoreless yards. But if you are the Saints, he’s the perfect vet for the younger guys to lean on. Meanwhile, it’s a good spot for Wentz to get onto a roster for the 2025 season.

The veteran quarterback hasn’t received any interest since free agency opened last March, while other quarterbacks around the league have gotten signed or at least received a tryout for rookie minicamp.

At this stage of his career, Wentz likely isn’t an adequate starter anymore, but for a team with a rookie head coach and quarterback, he could be a solid presence on a one-year deal.
