Bulls might be ready to move Nikola Vucevic again (but it’s not so simple)

Nikola Vucevic, Chicago Bulls

It’s no secret that Nikola Vucevic is always going to be frequently mentioned when Chicago Bulls trade rumors are discussed. The big man has been a target of other squads for years, and this offseason will be no different. With that being said, dealing Vuc may prove to be a bigger challenge than anticipated, for one reason: The Montenegrin big man reportedly wants to play on a contending team.

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, Vucevic “ideally wants to win now.” What that means for him is that his future is likely not going to play out as a Chicago Bull. At least, not if he gets his wish. The Bulls are still building toward being a consistent winner, and Vuc likely wants to actually experience one deep playoff run before he hangs it up.

Of course, that makes the prospect of trading him away this summer that much more complicated. It would be one thing if Chicago had the option of simply finding the best trade package they get offered, and then sending Vucevic to Toronto or Utah. But if the Bulls’ front office wants to honor his wishes, that complicates the process.

Vucevic wants to play on a contender

Heading into the 2025-26 NBA season, Vucevic will be entering the final year of his contract, and will be earning roughly $21.4 million. Scotto also reports that number nine has received trade interest from the Golden State Warriors in the past, and that the topic of a potential trade to the Bay Area is expected to be brought up again this offseason as a possibility.

If the Warriors are dead set on adding Vuc as their center as they seek to put together one last playoff run with Stephen Curry at the helm, that could give Chicago some leverage in a potential deal. But in other scenarios, they could be less fortunate.

What other contending teams around the association are going to be knocking down the Bulls’ door to get Vucevic this summer? It’s not like he’ll be one of the biggest names on the market. So if Golden State’s interest dips at any point, where does that leave them?

The worst-case scenario would obviously be a situation where Chicago ends up accepting a lesser offer simply to appease Vucevic. Of course, it’s always nice to honor your players’ wishes where you can. But you can be assured that Bulls fans are tired of seeing their team end up on the wrong side of these kinds of deals.
