Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is a diehard Dallas Mavericks fan.
When Luka Dončić was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, he had about as relatable a reaction as an NFL superstar could have.
“Wait what,” he said. “I’m sick rn.”
Mahomes has since shown Luka plenty of love, despite the NBA star no longer playing for his favorite team. He’s a class act like that. However, the Mavs fandom runs deep with Mahomes. When the Dallas Mavericks won the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft lottery on Monday night, Mahomes let his fandom really shine through. He took to social media to let everyone know just how excited he was.
He wrote on X (Formerly Twitter): “OMGGGGGG!! Let’s goo!!!!!”
Chiefs DE Charles Omenihu didn’t wait long to rain on Mahomes’ parade, highlighting a popular NBA conspiracy theory. The conspiracy is your classic quid pro quo from Adam Silver: The Mavs traded Dončić to the Lakers to help the league with ratings. The NBA rewarded the Mavs with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft lottery, allowing them to draft another superstar in Duke’s Cooper Flagg.
Omenihu teased Mahomes on X: “Pat you know this was rigged right?”
Even if it was just good fortune for Dallas, the optics on this one certainly aren’t the greatest. The Mavericks had a 1.8% chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft lottery. Jumping 10 spots in the lottery is unheard of, and it just so happens to occur now?
That said, Mahomes probably doesn’t care much for conspiracy theories. He’s a fan through and through. He’s also heard plenty of conspiracy nonsense about his own team, including accusations of officiating favoritism.
