Arsenal appear to have made significant progress in their pursuit of a new striker, with reports suggesting they’ve reached an agreement for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, valued at £66 million.
The 21-year-old Slovenian forward has been on Arsenal’s radar once again after a strong season, netting 20 goals across all competitions. His recent performance, including a spectacular goal against Bayern Munich, has impressed manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta. Even Harry Kane has taken note of Sesko’s talent, underlining his status as one of Europe’s brightest young attackers.
Arsenal had shown interest in Sesko last summer, but talks stalled due to Eddie Nketiah’s presence and Sesko opting to extend his stay at Leipzig. This summer, however, things look different.
There is reportedly a “gentleman’s agreement” in place that could allow Sesko to depart, with a release clause beginning at €60m (£49.5m) and possibly rising to €80m (£66m), depending on performance triggers.
Arsenal are reportedly ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United in the race and have allegedly already made an offer of €70m (£59m). Talks between Arsenal’s hierarchy and Sesko’s camp have taken place, with the player open to a move to the Emirates.
Sesko’s physicality, pace, and clinical edge make him a perfect fit for Arteta’s system and a much-needed solution at the striker position, especially given that only Kai Havertz has surpassed ten goals this season. With 35 goals in 78 appearances for Leipzig, Sesko has shown the potential to significantly boost Arsenal’s attacking threat.
Despite competition from other forwards like Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak, Sesko remains Arsenal’s top target. However, Leipzig’s £86m valuation and rival interest from Bayern Munich and AC Milan may complicate negotiations. Arsenal will be counting on Berta’s negotiation skills to seal the deal.
Fans are hopeful that Sesko could be the missing link in their title challenge
