Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has heaped praise on Sofyan Amrabat following his standout display in the club’s FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City. The Moroccan midfielder was handed a starting role in the defensive midfield position ahead of Casemiro, who was not fully fit for the high-stakes clash. Amrabat rose to the occasion, making 37 touches and completing 93 percent of his passes, with only three instances of lost possession. He also contributed defensively with two duels won, two clearances, two tackles, and a blocked shot, showcasing composure and grit under pressure.
After United’s 2-1 win, Scholes took to Instagram to express his admiration, comparing Amrabat’s performance to that of Gennaro Gattuso in his prime. The 27-year-old joined Manchester United on loan from Fiorentina last summer, with the club paying €10 million for the temporary deal. Though he initially found himself playing out of position at left-back under Erik ten Hag, he gradually found opportunities in midfield. It wasn’t until recently, with strong showings against Arsenal and Newcastle, that he earned a starting spot in the final.
His performance at Wembley has sparked debate about whether United should trigger the €20 million option to make his move permanent. Given Casemiro’s dip in form, keeping Amrabat could be a logical step, though it remains to be seen what the new management decides. Meanwhile, clubs like Fulham and Crystal Palace have shown interest, sending scouts to observe his recent games, indicating that the Moroccan might still be playing Premier League football next season regardless of United’s final decision.
