Mets ‘shocked’ beloved former player with rejection: I wanted to ‘come back home’

Jose Iglesias still seems to feel the pain of being rejected by the New York Mets this offseason.

In speaking to reporters Wednesday before the series finale against the New York Yankees, the San Diego Padres infielder said that he never got an offer in free agency from the Mets, and he was “totally shocked. … “That was a goal, to receive something and come back home,” per Newsday.

And now, it appears he’s ready to make them pay for it.

“I had a dream that I have a walk-off hit against the Mets,” he said. “It was a blooper over their first baseman . . . I had a dream that I had walk-off against the Mets, and we move forward to the World Series.”

Iglesias waited around until he signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Padres in March. At the time, the Mets had signed Nick Madrigal, who has since suffered a season-ending injury, and pegged him their utility infielder. New York also wanted to allow for roster flexibility for younger infielders Luisangel Acuña and Brett Baty.

Clearly, a front office run by president of baseball operations David Stearns won’t be swayed by good vibes, of which Iglesias provided many last season.

After his recall from Triple-A on May 31, Iglesias helped change the course of the Mets’ season — and not because he became a fan favorite with his hit song “OMG” and positive mindset. He contributed with big hits, stabilized second base by batting .337 with a .708 OPS in the regular season and helped the Mets reach the NLCS.

He has a .225 average and .551 OPS in 98 plate appearances this season. OMG, was Stearns right to let him walk?
