Chiefs make third roster move following 2025 rookie minicamp, signing TCU LB Cooper McDonald after successful tryout

The Kansas City Chiefs seem to have liked their group of undrafted free agent tryout players at rookie minicamp.

The team has signed a third player from the group, with TCU LB Cooper McDonald joining Carson-Newman S Major Williams and Louisiana Tech WR Jimmy Holiday among Kansas City’s post-rookie minicamp UDFA ranks.

McDonald posted some images of himself from the Chiefs’ rookie minicamp this weekend and pictures of him signing his contract on his Instagram page. Check it out:

This is another highly competitive position in Kansas City. Shaun Bradley and Blake Lynch are both recent cuts, and the team also has several depth players at linebacker who have been in the system for a long time. Still, McDonald seems to have shown enough to the defensive and special teams coaching staff to earn a spot on the 90-man offseason roster for the time being.

What are the Chiefs getting in LB Cooper McDonald?

McDonald spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons at San Diego State after two years at the University of Washington. He appeared in 24 games with the Aztecs, recording 84 total tackles, 8.5 for loss, 3.5 sacks, five passes defended, and two fumble recoveries. He appeared in 15 games with the Huskies, recording 28 tackles, six for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a pass defended. In his lone season with TCU, McDonald appeared in nine games with 25 total tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, one pass defended, and one forced fumble.

During the pre-draft process, McDonald weighed 6 feet 2 inches and 235 pounds. He is the prototypical modern NFL linebacker, boasting size, speed, and coverage ability, though he didn’t exactly test the best at his Pro Day. My expectations are that he’ll contribute primarily to Dave Toub’s special teams unit during OTAs and training camp.

Any corresponding roster decision to make room for McDonald on the 90-man roster is currently unclear, but expect those to be revealed in due time.
