The Kansas City Chiefs have waived a pair of undrafted free agents just days after officially signing them to the 90-man offseason roster.
According to the NFL’s daily personnel notice for Tuesday, the Chiefs have waived former Tennessee S Will Brooks and former San Jose State WR Justin Lockhart. Both players were among the 16 undrafted free agents officially signed on Saturday ahead of the beginning of rookie minicamp.
Lockhart was waived with an injury designation, which means that should he clear waivers, he’ll revert to injured reserve for Kansas City. It’s unclear what type of injury he might have suffered. Still, the likeliest scenario is that he’ll later agree on an injury settlement that pays him a portion of the partially guaranteed money on his contract.
This comes after reports that the team had signed Carson-Newman S Major Williams, Louisiana Tech WR Jimmy Holiday, and TCU LB Cooper McDonald. The team also terminated the contract of veteran CB Robert Rochell, a former fourth-round pick in 2021, who the Chiefs had signed in free agency.
The signing of Williams and Holiday appears directly related to the dismissal of Brooks and Lockhart. The Chiefs also recently released LB Blake Lynch, which necessitated another signing at the linebacker position in McDonald. There’s a reaction for every NFL roster-related action on the 90-man roster, especially when it comes to signing players following rookie minicamp tryouts.
The Chiefs may be done signing tryout players from their rookie minicamp, but they also could be navigating a few more roster moves. Only time will tell us what the plans are in that regard. Look for the team to solidify the 90-man roster before OTAs begin later this month.
