3 NY Mets players who could replace Brett Baty if he comes up short

St. Louis Cardinals v New York Mets

To say that Brett Baty’s time with the New York Mets has been disappointing would be an understatement. Through 188 games, he’s slashed .214/.279/.328 with 16 home runs, 59 RBIs, a 70 OPS+, and a wRC+ of 71. This is far from what people envisioned for him when MLB Pipeline had him as the second-best prospect in the Mets system.

Despite starting 2025 in the majors, he was sent down to Triple-A to make room for Jeff McNeil. However, with the injury to Jesse Winker, Baty was recalled and will join the Mets in Arizona. But with how Baty’s career has gone, it feels like his last opportunity to prove he can be a major league player. If he struggles again, it’s likely the last time we’ll see him in a Mets uniform. Here are three players who could replace a potentially struggling Baty.

1) Donovan Walton

Donovan Walton will be a very popular name if Baty’s struggles continue. Walton was a candidate to make the Opening Day roster after Nick Madrigal fractured his left shoulder. He was seen as someone the Mets could have on their bench and come in late in games as a defensive replacement. Although the Mets decided to go with young guys like Baty and Luisangel Acuna for their roster, it did not end Walton’s chances of cracking the big league roster.

Through 31 games in Triple-A, he’s slashed .259/.341/.411 with five home runs and 14 RBIs. Out of all the players mentioned on this list, Walton has the most major league experience. Over his five seasons in the bigs, he’s appeared in 70 games, slashing .170/.227/.305 with four home runs and 22 RBIs.

Although his numbers at the plate are not the best, that will not be what the Mets ask of him. He’ll likely be solely a bench guy, coming in as a defensive replacement at second base. A position where he has committed only one error over 278 innings played. He also has the ability to play shortstop, third base, and the outfield. While his defense is not as sharp there as it is at second, it will give the Mets a lot more versatility on their roster.
