According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Kansas City Chiefs made six roster moves on Wednesday. When more than a dozen signings of undrafted free agents that have been reported are made official, the team will need more space on its 90-man offseason roster.
Tight end Baylor Cupp, guard McKade Mettauer and defensive back Jason Taylor were waived. Cupp appeared in one 2024 game after navigating injuries throughout his lone season on the team’s practice squad. Mettauer suffered a knee injury in last year’s preseason opener and spent the season on injured reserve. Taylor joined the Chiefs on a reserve/future contract in January.
Veteran tight end Anthony Firkser and linebacker Shaun Bradley were released. Because of their veteran status, neither will be subject to waivers.
Firkser appeared in three games for the Chiefs last season after beginning the year with the New York Jets. Bradley also joined Kansas City in January on a reserve/future contract.
Based on recent history, there is a chance Kansas City could re-sign any of these players next week after evaluating its first-year players at this weekend’s rookie minicamp.
The Chiefs also received a third international player exemption for offensive lineman Chukuebukua Godrick, who is a native of Nigeria. Godrick has been with the Chiefs since 2023. The move allows the team to keep 91 players on the offseason roster. Godrick can also be kept on the in-season practice squad without counting against the 16-player limit.
With these moves, the Chiefs now have 77 players under contract. With Godrick’s exemption, this leaves 14 roster spots open. These numbers will change soon as the team’s undrafted signings are made official.
