The New York Mets blew a 7-1 lead to the Washington Nationals on Sunday, falling 8-7 in their second walk-off loss of the series.

While New York’s bullpen struggled, an error by first baseman Pete Alonso ended the game. After right-handed relief pitcher Ryne Stanek allowed the tying run to score in the ninth inning, marking his second blown save in the last three games, he induced a ground ball to first base that looked to be routine. As Stanek went to cover first, Alonso sailed the throw over his head.

The error allowed Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams to score the winning run.

While he is not known for his defense, this was Alonso’s first error of the 2025 MLB season.

It came at a bad time, as a good throw to Stanek would have given the Mets two outs and a good chance to escape the ninth inning tied. Speaking with reporters after the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was asked about that game losing play.

“We didn’t make a play,” he said. “Routine play and we didn’t make it.

While this was a brutal loss for the Mets, they still sit atop the National League East with a 19-9 record. That said, they are now just 7-8 away from Citi Field where they have an MLB-best home record of 12-1 through 13 games.

Looking to bounce back in the series finale on Sunday, New York hopes to leave Washington with a 2-2 split before shifting focus to their three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
