Mets Reportedly May Push for $7 Million Closer From Division Rival

Mets' Coaching staff announced at Winter Meetings

The New York Mets are expected to be buyers at the trade deadline, and every contender looks to add to the bullpen.

Carlos Mendoza and the Mets will certainly be in a position to add to the bullpen, but how they do it remains to be seen.

Grant Young of Sports Illustrated believes they will target Kyle Finnegan of the Washington Nationals despite the bullpen being a strong suit so far this season.

“It remains to be seen whether the Mets can keep this bullpen success up,” wrote Young. “If they begin to falter as the season continues, they could look to the trade market to add more firepower for the postseason push.”

While the Nationals are likely to move on from Finnegan, especially if the team is out of contention by the deadline, it’s hard to see Washington make a trade with a team in its own division.

That doesn’t mean the Mets couldn’t work a deal. It just means they may have to overpay even more so than the next-highest bidder. Relievers are a hot commodity at the deadline on a yearly basis.

Finnegan is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, but even a rental will still pull in a decent return as postseason-bound teams can never have too much pitching.

Pairing Finnegan with Edwin Diaz would provide the Mets with one of the best 1-2 punches in baseball. Acquiring him is certainly a move that should be on their radar even if it takes a little more to push the deal over the finish line.
