New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone still hasn’t spoken with struggling closer Devin Williams about a possible role change.
In fact, Boone hasn’t spoken with Williams at all.
Boone met with reporters Saturday morning despite inclement weather postponing the Yankees’ game with the Toronto Blue Jays. The veteran skipper admitted he hasn’t seen Williams yet following the All-Star closer’s blown save Friday night.
Boone previously acknowledged he’s open to potentially giving fan-favorite reliever Luke Weaver more ninth-inning opportunities. Williams allowed three runs in Friday’s 4-2 loss.
“We’ll try to do what’s best for the team and Devin,” Boone said, according to the New York Post. “Knowing that, let’s get through this bump in the road, and [we’re] still expecting great things.”
Both the fact that Boone and Williams still haven’t spoken and that Boone candidly admitted it is astonishing. Williams, a two-time All-Star with the Milwaukee Brewers, already owns an 11.25 ERA and -0.8 bWAR over eight innings.
Yankees fans chanted, “We Want Weaver,” during Williams’ latest dreadful outing. Interestingly, Williams has been worse in non-save situations (six earned runs and five walks over four innings) than in save situations (four earned runs and only two walks in four innings).
Boone wants to stay optimistic, especially given Williams’ track record in Milwaukee. The 2013 second-round pick tallied 9.0 bWAR and a sterling 1.70 ERA from 2020-24.
“He hasn’t gotten [swings and misses],” Boone said. “He’s been behind in the count a little bit.
“Once he starts flipping that and starts getting some count leverage, I expect him to go back to being the dominant closer he’s been,” Boone added.
