The Kansas City Chiefs moved down one spot in the 2025 NFL Draft, swapping places with the Philadelphia Eagles. Picking at No. 32, the final pick in the first round, the Chiefs selected offensive tackle Josh Simmons out of Ohio State. In trading, they also picked up a fifth-round pick from Philadelphia. Below is all you need to know about their new protection for Patrick Mahomes.

Stats & Accolades

  • 2021 @ San Diego State: Redshirted
  • 2022 @ San Diego State: Started 13 games at right tackle.
  • 2023 @ Ohio State: Started 13 games at left tackle.
  • 2024 @ Ohio State: Started six games at left tackle. Missed final 10 games with torn patellar tendon. Honorable Mention All-Big Ten.

What the Chiefs are getting:

Simmons would likely have pushed for the status of the draft’s top offensive lineman if it wasn’t for an injury that limited him to just six games during the 2024 season. When healthy, he’s an athletic, scheme-versatile blindside protector with the well-rounded skill set to impact any NFL offense he joins. If you just watched his Ohio State tape, you’d never think this was a guy who started his career at a Group of 5 school. His game does lean more finesse than power, but the floor is high enough that any team who has a plan for Simmons and his recent injury should be able to reap the benefits sooner rather than later.

Strengths

  • Moves fluidly for a player his size, doesn’t lumber in his steps at all
  • Explodes out of his stance to land first contact
  • Constant foot fire keeps him ready to react to any pass rush move
  • Combination of strength, technique, and athleticism will make him a fit in any run scheme
  • Utilizes a sharp jump set to wall off defenders fast on down blocks

Weaknesses

  • Doesn’t show a ton of pop behind his punches
  • Season-ending knee injury cut short his final season at Ohio State
  • Can be a bit up-and-down when handling twists/games

Athletic Testing

  • Height: 6’5
  • Weight: 317 pounds
  • 40-yard dash: N/A
  • 10-yard split: N/A
  • Vertical jump: N/A
  • Broad jump: N/A
  • 3-cone drill: N/A
  • Short shuttle: N/A
  • Bench press: 33 reps
