What a month of April it’s been for New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso.
After a painfully long free agency saga that felt like it would end with Alonso accepting more money elsewhere, the fan favorite slugger eventually worked out a short-term deal that allowed him to remain in Queens.
And it’s difficult to imagine where the Mets might be right now if Alonso elected to skip town, rather than re-sign.
Through his first 25 games of the season, Alonso is tied for second in the MLB in RBI, with 26.
He’s also fifth in batting average, at .341, second in OPS (on-base plus slugging) at 1.122, and tied for third in WAR (wins above replacement) at +1.8. With these early accomplishments in mind, Alonso earned some well-deserved recognition on the national level on April 24, just after the Mets swept the NL East rival Philadelphia Phillies.

“Polar Bear power . Pete Alonso and the Mets’ hot start continues!” The MLB’s official X account posted. Along with a graphic that listed his statistics, stating, “Pete Alonso is on fire.”
They’re not wrong, as Alonso is currently performing like an MVP candidate.
Alonso settled for a two-year, $54 million contract this offseason. But the key contract stipulation was a “player opt-out” in 2026.
There’s still a long way to go, but as of April 25, Alonso is cashing in on that player opt-out in a massive way. Riding a seven-game win streak into the weekend, the Mets sit atop the entire MLB at 18-7. But they wouldn’t be in this position without their fun-loving first baseman.
After opening up the year by losing two out of three to the Houston Astros, the Mets nearly dropped another two out of three in Miami.
Fortunately, Alonso saved the day with a game-tying three-run home run in the eighth, and ‘The Amazins’ have rolled ever since with “Polar Bear Pete” leading the charge.
As you can see, Alonso deserves every bit of attention he’s getting here in April.
