Mets Could Swing Blockbuster Trade for $50 Million All-Star on Struggling Team

The New York Mets are 18-7 to start the season. Their star players, Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Pete Alonso, have been masking some of their flaws, but the Mets may not let that be the case much longer.

The Mets will be getting reinforcements back from injury in the starting rotation eventually, but they may have to trade for an upgrade in center field. Tyrone Taylor and Jose Siri have struggled to start the season, and Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller called the Mets the ideal landing spot for Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox in a trade.

“FanGraphs has both Tyrone Taylor and Jose Siri down for both negative offense and negative defense during their time spent in CF this season, combining for negative-0.4 fWAR,” wrote Miller.

“Baseball Reference is slightly more optimistic at negative-0.1 bWAR, but still clearly agrees that the current status quo ain’t great. Adding Robert to the mix could be the final piece of the puzzle this year, and they may well want to bring him back again next year on that club option.” Robert signed a six-year, $50 million extension in 2020 and has club options for 2026 and 2027. The White Sox are set up to become sellers at the trade deadline, and Robert will be a hot name this summer. Robert himself was surprised he even made it to opening day with the White Sox.

“Honestly, no,” Robert responded to 670 The Score’s Chris Emma when he asked if he expected to be on the White Sox opening day roster. “I know there were a lot of rumors around there.

I didn’t think I would be here.” Robert is struggling to start the season, but perhaps playing for a team with winning aspirations could change that. At his best, Robert is an All-Star with the potential to hit 40 home runs. His lone All-Star appearance came in 2023. That season, he also struggled through his first 30 games.
