The NFL draft is finally upon us, bringing an end to months of speculation about who the Kansas City Chiefs will select over the next three days. One area of the team that must be addressed at some point in the draft is wide receiver depth. Outside of their top three weapons, Kansas City is thin, with its only reliable target being veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster.
While this draft isn’t deep at receiver, there are a few late round targets worth taking a look at. That said, the Chiefs may have better luck finding wide receiver depth perusing the trade block. One wide receiver that’s reportedly popped up in trade conversations this week is Pittsburgh Steelers wideout George Pickens.
Despite the Steelers having conversations with teams about Pickens, he would probably demand to start if he came to Kansas City. Thus, acquiring him isn’t very likely.
However, Brett Veach may be able to strike a deal with former Chiefs executive and current Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles for a young receiver who has yet to reach his potential.
Chiefs Land Tyler Scott in Surprise Draft Day Trade
In this projected trade, the Chiefs acquire speedster Tyler Scott from the Chicago Bears for two 2025 seventh-round picks (No. 226 and No. 251. Scott, who is only 23, is known for his speed after running a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine in 2023.
Even so, one issue has plagued him early in his career: drops. As a rookie, the University of Cincinnati product caught 53% (17/32) of his passes. In some cases, Scott had crucial drops that ended up costing Chicago games.
As a result, the 23-year-old saw his offensive snaps drop from 39% in 2023 to 3% in 2024. Scott’s issues catching the ball sound similar to Skyy Moore’s issues. If that’s the case, acquiring Scott seems counterintuitive.
Nevertheless, Kansas City could be a great fit for Scott. His speed, while not as game-breaking as Tyreek Hill’s, is something the Chiefs have been searching for since Hill left in 2022. While Moore has proven that improving your ability to catch isn’t always easy, Scott has been called a hard worker during his time in Chicago, even if he’s not seeing the field.
If Scott can fix his drop issue, he can take over as the Chiefs’ speed threat if they choose to move on from Hollywood Brown after the 2025 season. Plus, with two years left on his rookie contract compared to Moore’s one, Scott offers more long-term upside.
While trading for Scott is risky, acquiring him could be safer than drafting a deep receiver late. If the Bears are open to trading Scott, Veach should definitely make the call.
