Barcelona missed the chance to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club over the summer, and it now seems their focus has shifted toward securing a top Liverpool star.
The Catalan club has been revitalized under the leadership of Hansi Flick, recently impressing with their defensive organization by neutralizing Kylian Mbappe’s impact in El Clasico. While it might be premature to declare that Barcelona has returned to peak form, Flick’s strategies have set them on a promising path. His tactical adjustments have made Barcelona a formidable counter-attacking team, with an aggressively high defensive line often placed near the halfway mark—a high-risk, high-reward approach.
As Barcelona continues to improve, their resurgence could enhance their appeal, especially if they manage to claim another La Liga title. This renewed momentum may be why club president Joan Laporta is reportedly laying the groundwork for an ambitious move to bring Liverpool’s Mo Salah to Barcelona at the season’s end, according to reports from Sport.
Though Salah will be 33 before the start of the 2025/26 season, his influence on the field remains undeniable. In the Champions League alone, he has accumulated nine assists and nine goals this season. Despite his age, his potential arrival on a free transfer would be financially attractive to Barcelona, especially compared to the cost of signing Williams. This financial advantage, along with Salah’s consistent performance, has prompted Barcelona to consider him as a viable target over Williams, at least for now.
With Nico Williams still young, Barcelona could revisit their interest in him in the future, perhaps a season or two down the line when they’re better positioned to make a move. For the time being, Salah remains committed to Liverpool, who will undoubtedly hope he signs an extension before January, as this would prevent him from negotiating with other clubs.
