Breaking News: Patrick Mahomes Has Clearly Learned From First Chiefs Draft Mistake

Over the past six seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs have appeared in five Super Bowls, thanks in large part to an explosive offense led by Patrick Mahomes.

As the leader of the franchise, Mahomes has played a pivotal role in their success, even influencing draft selections.

He regularly discusses draft prospects with general manager Brett Veach and has even reportedly affected who the Chiefs select in the past.

In 2020, Kansas City selected LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the 32nd pick in the draft. According to an ESPN article that was released after the draft, Veach texted Mahomes shortly before the draft started and asked him who he wanted. Mahomes responded with a single word, “Clyde”.

Although Edwards-Helaire had a decent rookie season with the Chiefs, he fell out of favor quickly and became an afterthought in the offense.

Due to this, it seems like Mahomes has learned to let Veach and head coach Andy Reid make the decisions.

According to Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports, Mahomes said, “They’re [Veach and Reid] going to go out and pick the guys that keep us Super Bowl contenders.” Mahomes not having direct input over who the Chiefs select this year is likely best for the team.

Patrick Mahomes Admits He Has Little Input About Who the Chiefs Select in NFL Draft

Leaving the draft selections to the GM and head coach is a good idea for Mahomes, especially this year. This year’s class is loaded at running back, which the former Texas Tech quarterback has already failed to evaluate once.

Although it’s hard to miss such a talented class, it is possible, and even though Mahomes has a short track record, it’s clearly not a good one.

That said, there is still a good chance that Kansas City drafts a running back at some point between Thursday and Saturday. On Tuesday, the Chiefs met with Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson virtually.

Be that as it may, if Kansas City does end up drafting a running back, fans can be safely assured that Mahomes didn’t have the final input on who was selected.
