The NFL Draft is a little over 24 hours away, and some Kansas City Chiefs fans and reporters believe the team should target a running back at some point this year.
Kansas City added former San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell this offseason, yet they don’t have anyone under contract in 2026 and beyond.
Fans justifiably believe reinforcements are needed, especially with Isiah Pacheco’s contract expiring at the end of the 2025 season. This year is certainly a good one to take a running back with how deep the position is in the draft.
Given the depth of the class, though, most Chiefs fans would prefer the team to add one later in the draft and focus on the trenches early.
Yet, Kansas City could be eyeing a running back early in the draft. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid conducted a virtual call with Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson on Tuesday. Reid’s inclusion on the call is important as it shows real interest in adding a running back with a high draft pick.

Chiefs Setting Eyes on TreVeyon Henderson as a Potential Replacement For Isiah Pacheco
Henderson spent all four years of his college career with the Buckeyes as one of their main backs. While he missed time during his sophomore and junior seasons due to injury, he proved how explosive of a player he was when on the field.
Through four years, Henderson had 590 carries for 3,761 yards and 42 touchdowns. Furthermore, the 22-year-old added 77 receptions for 853 yards and six touchdowns through the air.
As a senior, Henderson carried the ball 144 times for 1,016 yards and scored 10 rushing touchdowns while adding 27 receptions for 284 yards and one receiving score. Henderson reached these milestones as a senior due to Ohio State’s National Championship run. Even so, what he did was impressive and showed he could be durable through 16 games.
Some have compared Henderson’s skill set to that of former Chiefs fan favorite running back Jamaal Charles. While that’s exciting, Kansas City would likely have to select Henderson with the 31st pick or trade back into the late 30s. Although he is a projected second-rounder, he will likely be selected in the early-to-mid second round and not fall to the Chiefs at No. 63.
If Henderson were the pick at 31, some would be upset with it, given the team’s needs on the defensive line. Be that as it may, if Henderson is deemed the best available player, then Brett Veach will definitely take him.
